“Best of” Lists can be a Good Resource

There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when you are thinking about switching careers or are looking for a new job in the health care industry: your experience, location, hours, pay and interest in the position itself.  You may also want to check out lists of best companies in your chosen industry to get a sense of which are considered good employers. Researching top companies can help you start a list of which ones you want to work for to increase the chances that you will be happy there in the long term.

There are lots of different lists out there of “Best” companies to work for, but there seem to be a few companies that are found on a diversity of lists.  Business Insider, in partnership with PayScale, did a list of the Top 25 Healthcare Companies to Work for in America this May. For them, pharmaceutical companies Amgen and Bristol-Myers Squibb took the top two spots, followed by biotechnology company Celgene at No. 3.

Their final scores were determined by multiplying six criteria: high job satisfaction, low job stress, ability to telecommute, high job meaning, experienced median pay, and salary delta. Pay was weighed double in the calculations because they felt it was the most important factor.

Fortune Magazine did a 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2015. Although they didn’t just focus on health care companies, some different ones were higher on their list. Genentech, a biotechnology company, came in at number 9 overall. According to Fortune, “not only is it considered a great place to work, but it has also been recognized as one of the most innovative companies in the country.” CHG Healthcare Services and Stryker also made the top 20 overall.

Fortune’s Best Place to Work in HealthCare list looked totally different, with Texas Health Resources, Springfield Nephrology Associates, Inc. and Encompass Home Health and Hospice in the top three.

CHG Healthcare Services also got a great score and was on the top on the MHA Degree website, which has a Top 17 Healthcare Companies to Consider for Employment, with Genetech also making their top 5. The other four companies: Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, Southern Ohio Medical Center and Meridian Health.

Working in the healthcare industry means that you have a lot of different kinds of companies to choose from. If you spend some time doing a little research, you will be able to develop a list of the best companies in division of the healthcare industry you want to work in, be it sales, administration, nursing or research and development that are located in a place near you.
